On photography...

For some time now, I'm stuck when it comes to photography..It's just that taking a good, beautiful photo, just for the sake of a good photo started to be insuficient in my case. In this way, capturing a nice scenery, landscape or a model puts the photographer in the role of a mere observer with a piece of equipment capable of capturing the scene that is already there, composed and set by itself, without his personal emotions and involvement in the process of pressing the shutter. Don't get me wrong, maybe a year ago, I would die just to take a beautiful, technically perfect photograph that looks like it came from editorial for some magazine. Like this one:

All I can say that these examples are beautiful photographs and I can honestly praise the skills of their creators. Maybe I wouldn't know how to do it  properly...But it's just that pretty soulless photos without a story behind it and message that needs to be communicated, started to leave me indifferrent. And I started to ask myself is something wrong with me, because 90% of photos I see on-line and off-line produce the same effect..

I admit, I'm a little lost right now, not knowing which particular field of photography should I focus on, because, the moment has come when I should be able to decide. I know that a fashion photo, documentary photo and landscape photo belong to completely different fields and they all have their rules. Fashion photo have completely different purpose than documentary photo. Not every photo is supposed to communicate strong personal message from its creator, very often it's even not wanted. My problem is just that I don't know how to feel about souch photos, regardless of which field of photography they cover..

If I could sum it up, I would repeat the words of  a photographer Guy Tal and dilemma he's discussing on his blog:

"At the core of the discussion is the simple question: where does objectivity end? In other words, where is the point at which objective/found reality stops and personal interpretation, intent, aesthetic sensibilities — the artist’s own contribution — begin. Summing up my position, I contend that images pertaining to be completely objective, whether through omission of personal intent, or a deliberate attempt to duplicate the creative efforts of someone else, are of lesser artistic merit than original work representing the artist’s own creative choices."

"The distinction I had in mind was not that found beauty is necessarily indicative of creative laziness, but that images relying solely on happy coincidences or already well-known compositions — where the photographer is but a passive bystander recording what is in front of them and without contributing anything other than skill — are of lesser artistic significance."

"It would be futile for me to challenge anyone’s personal taste, methods, or motivations, but I do see a distinct difference between images carefully crafted by an artist to convey their own feelings and inspiration, and those merely seeking to compete for eyeballs"

I couldn't agree more .

Ok, I'll stop philosophizing and show a few examples of photos that DO touch me emotionally:

And Anna Hurtig, who's work I greatly admire, so simple, yet so sincere..

I can't really explain why do certain pictures of the above induce certain effect and others not.. I didn't want to offend anyone's taste with this post, just wanted to share with you some of my reflections and dilemmas. Maybe your opinions on this matter will help me clear my mind..!

  1. Odlićan post!
Potpuno razumijem tvoje dileme.

Aparat imam kakav imam, šanse za novi nemam, dnevnog svjetla nemam, umjetna postojeća nedovoljna, prostor malen, frustrirana sam do granice odustajanja :( toliko utrošenog vremena i truda i volje, a ja bih ponekad kad vidim rezultat najradije sa svih svojih xy kila skakala od jada po memorijskoj kartici....
